Father's Unconditional Love
Once upon a time, in the outskirts of a city, there lived a taxi-driver with his little daughter. His universe revolved around her. And although life seemed tough and wearying at times, the taxi-driver never lost hope. A hope that one day his daughter will grow up to live a better life.
I'm full papa. I don't want to eat anymore. Okay, my angel. Now go to bed, papa will come in a moment and tuck you in. Okay! Mohan, as that was his name, would seldom eat a full meal, for even an extra piece of bun was hard to earn. It had been five years since he had lost his wife to a fatal disease. Things were good back then. Mohan drove his own taxi and earned enough for his little family. But in order to incur the cost of his wife's treatment, the gentleman had to sell his taxi. But sadly, he couldn't save his wife.
My angel! Don't you want papa to tell you a story? Yes Papa! Once upon a time in a kingdom far, far, away, there was a king…
Now, Mohan drives someone else's taxi and even after working through the hours, he earns hardly enough. Here you go, angel! Milk and cereal. Where is your tea, papa? Baby, papa doesn't feel like drinking tea today. Come on, now. Finish it quickly. Every morning, Mohan would drop Sarah to her school… Bye, Papa! Be a good girl, Sara! See you after school. And from there, he would go into his day, driving taxis tirelessly all around the city.
Big day, my angel! I am scared, papa! Don't be scared, Sara! You are smart and brave like your mother! Remember. high- school is where a child's personality gets shape. You are the dough… choose the mold you would want to see yourself shaped into. Yes, papa! That day, as Mohan dropped Sarah outside her new school, a sense of pride filled his heart. He was proud of his daughter; he knew his wife would be too. But deep down, the taxi-driver also knew that life was going to be more challenging than ever.
Papa. I need to buy these books. Are-aren't they available at the school library? No. Okay, give me the list.
$200. Cash or card? I-I forgot my wallet. Excuse me. You will get $75 for the watch. That's it. Please I need $200. $200? You must be out of your mind. $75. it is. Take it or leave it. I will take it. Wait. you think I can get something for this chain? Hmm.. it's an old one, but it's made of gold. I will give you $200 for both. Mohan's breath shivered as he nodded, for the chain was a gift from his wife. Thank you! 12% interest per month as discussed. Sign here and here.
Papa! My angel! Here are your books. Thank you, papa! You are the best! Days passed since that night and Mohan began to work longer shifts, as Sara's school expenses kept rising.
How much is the hotdog for? $1.50 Give me one please. I am starving. Hello? Yes, my angel! Papa, I am very hungry. Can you get me something on your way? Didn't you eat dinner? I didn't like it much, so I threw it in the trash and cleaned the dishes. Please… can you get me something? Yes, sure. How about a hotdog? Yum! You are the best! Could- could you wrap it up for me please? That was one of the several nights that Mohan would sleep with an empty stomach. But he would not mind it. For him, his daughter's happiness was everything. Now while Mohan worked tirelessly, Sara began to discover a new world around her friends.
This nail polish is so pretty, Susan. it's better than mine. I know right? My father got it from Hong kong. Limited edition. Ooh! I love Hong kong. We are planning to go there during the summer holidays. You are awfully quiet today. Sara? I am just listening to you guys. You know you’ve pretty nails. Why don't you use nail polish? I-I don't wear them to school. I have like a huge collection, you know! You should wear them to school. You are our friend, remember?
How is my little angel? Papa. all my friends wear nail polish. I want to too, you know? Sure. I will get you one from the store- No, papa! Not from the local store. I need the branded ones. The ones Sasha and Susan wear. But Sarah- Papa, please! I don't know. I want it.
Have a great day, my angel! Hey Sasha! Check it out! Oooh! Nice colour, girl! Oooh! Nice colour girl! Hey, who is this man who drops you every day to school? Oh, him? Um… he… is my taxi-driver. Come on, guys! The bell's on. Only the people you love the most can prick your heart and well your eyes. That day, Mohan drove his taxi with a heavy heart, for all this while. he was a taxi-driver for the world, but a father for Sara. That, changed that day.
Papa… um… it's okay you can drop me here? You don't have to go all the way to the gate! Um… you sure? I have always dropped you at the gate? Since you were little… Please, papa? Of course! Of course! if one could feel what Mohan felt that day, they'd know what pain means. Mohan knew that his daughter was embarrassed of his profession, but as a loving father, he just shrugged the feeling off.
More days passed, and the once innocent and adorable Sara, had now grown pompous and arrogant. There is a school trip that everyone is going to next Friday. I want to go, too. Sure. Where to? Fort Lauderdale. What? $250 includes flight fare, stay and food. 250? Yes. Is it something that you cannot skip? Of course not! What are you talking about? Need to pay the money by day-after, latest. Goodnight, papa! You're the best! Goodnight!
What is this? My wedding ring. Hmmm.. $200. Not a cent more. I need $300. Can't do. Sorry. I beg you. Take a higher interest if need be. But I want $300. Hmm…I like a desperate man. Good for my business. Sign here, and here.
Here, $250 dollars for the trip, and keep this extra $50 with you. Don't use it unless it is absolutely necessary. Okay. Now your bag's packed and I've made some toast for your journey. For my journey? Papa, I am flying! You don't take food from home! The airline provides you! Oh! Okay! My bad! I love you, papa! Take care of yourself angel, and here, keep my phone with you. I will call you when I can. it's an old phone, Papa. My friends will laugh at me. You know what? It's okay, I will tell them I forgot my phone at home or something. Okay! Mohan dropped his daughter at the airport. He couldn't tell her how anxious and worried he was for his little angel, He just wished her a happy trip and left from there.
Oh my god! We are finally going out of the city! I know right? Where is Sasha? She is running late. But don't worry. Come let's get our boarding passes. What is it? I-I can't find my ticket! What? It was in my bag? Did I drop it somewhere? Sara, you can't board the flight without your ticket! Huh?! Oh my god! Search properly! Meanwhile, Mohan had now driven into the city with a heavy heart, when he turned towards the passenger seat to see Sarah's flight ticket. Oh my God! My angel left her ticket here! Her flight leaves in an hour and I have come far away from the airport! And the traffic! But Mohan wasn't going to let his daughter miss her flight. Determined as always, he turned his taxi around and hurled towards the direction of the airport. Mohan drove through the traffic, took short-cuts, and fast-lanes to finally reach the airport. But just as he was nearing the gate, another taxi from the other side came and collided with his. The police and the crowd gathered around the area.
Sasha, where were you? Sorry I am late. Sara. it's your driver! He’s met with an accident outside. What? Sara ran outside the airport and making her way through the crowd saw her father in the taxi, the windshield scattered and him, breathing heavily. Angel… You forgot your ticket! Tears welled up in Sara's eyes and heart filled with gratitude and love. She at once hugged her father. I am sorry, papa. I am so sorry. I love you, papa! I am sorry I could not be a good daughter. You are not good, Sara. You are the best! Sara? Your driver had your ticket? And at that moment, Sara turned to her friends. He is not my driver. He is my father, and I am proud of him. And so, that was the story of a daughter and a father's unconditional love for her. You see, there are numerous tales about a mother's love. but a father's love is as unconditional as a mother's. It's just that not all fathers can express themselves the way mothers do. So. as children, it is our responsibility to always understand them, and be kind and thankful to them. Always.
